Bondoukou: A poacher arrested with 5 ivory tusks and an elephant's tail
Specializing in the slaughter of elephants and the ivory trade, Kambou Sansan Issouf, an animal trafficker, was arrested on Monday, March 21, 2022 in Bondoukou, in the east of Côte d'Ivoire. He had five ivory tusks and an elephant's tail in his possession. Humans have been hunting elephants since 2013 in Comoé National Park. This feat was possible thanks to the fruit of the collaboration between the Unit for Combating Transnational Organized Crime (UCT), the Directorate of Forest and Water Police of the Ministry of Water and Forests (DPFE-MINEF), the Ivorian Office of Parks and Reserves (OIPR) and Eagle-Côte d'Ivoire, from which they received technical assistance.
Referred to the Bondoukou Court Section, Kambou Sansan Issouf was tried on Thursday, March 24, 2022, by the Bondoukou Court of First Instance. He was found guilty of the charges against him. He was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 18 months, and a fine of 500,000 CFA francs for the offenses of slaughtering elephants in a national park and marketing ivories. As a reminder, the international trade in ivory has been declared illegal since 1989, but African elephant populations continue to decline. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), each year 20,000 to 30,000 elephants are killed for their ivories, equivalent to 50 to 80 individuals per day.
