Protected Area
ABOKOUAMEKRO WILDLIFE RESERVE
Initially called “Abokouamekro Animal Park”, this protected area was created in 1986 at the initiative of the late President Félix Houphouet-Boigny for the development of tourism. The creation of the Abokouamekro Wildlife Reserve was completed by the issuance of decree No. 93-693 on 19/08/93. It covers a total area of 20,430 ha, including 7,230 ha developed for tourist visits.
It is located about 50km north-east of Yamoussoukro, 95 km north-west of Toumodi and 40km south-west of Dimbokro. It is therefore at the gates of the political capital of Côte d'Ivoire and in the heart of “V Baoulé”. Its particularity is that its fauna comes from the national parks of Côte d'Ivoire and South Africa for vision tourism. It is home to buffaloes, buzzards, antelopes, buffoons and many other animal species. The breeding of wild animals is practiced there.
The Abokouamekro Wildlife Reserve is one of the essential links in the tourism development of the Lakes Region.
