2022 Jun 28Development of the cultivation of wild edible mushrooms in Côte d'Ivoire: seed production and carpophore growth tests on four organic substrates
Background: Mushrooms are highly appreciated by people and are part of non-wood forest
products. They represent a source of income and contribute to the well-being of populations. This study aims to
promote edible mushrooms through trials to cultivate appreciated species in order to popularize
them and fight against poverty.
Materials and methods: Based on a bibliographic review, Auricularia cornea, Agrocybe
elegantior, Coprinus sp., Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinus squarrosulus, Marasmiellus inoderma, Pleurotus inoderma, Pleurotus flabellatus, Pleurotus flabellatus, Pleurotus ostreatus,
Pleurotus ostreatus, Psathyrella tuberculata and, Volvariella volvacea were selected in order to be tested on four organic substrates locals.
These species were inoculated on agar
medium and transplanted onto sorghum soaked for 24 hours in order to obtain seeds. The seeds of A.
elegantior, L. squarrosulus, M. inoderma, and P. ostreatus were tested on substrates of rice straw, banana
leaves, palm stalks and sawdust.
Results: The average performance obtained was recorded and compared. This study
produced 447 seed bottles including 329 from P. ostreatus, 46 from V. volvacea, 46 from V. volvacea, 27 from G. lucidum, 14 from L.
squarrosulus, 12 from P. tuberculata, 8 from A. elegantior, 8 from A. elegantior, 4 from A. elegantior, 4 from L. cf. americanus, 4 from M. inoderma and 3 from Coprinus sp.
Pleurotus ostreatus recorded the highest yield on rice straw, A.
elegantior and M. inoderma performed best on palm stalks, and L. squarrosulus was found to be productive on sawdust.
Conclusion: This study showed that the cultivation of wild edible mushrooms is
possible in Côte d'Ivoire. The results obtained must be popularized to the public in order to
participate in the socio-economic development of local populations.
