Exploitation and socioeconomic importance of China bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. ex J.C. Wendl.
In Ivory Coast, bamboo from China is a non-wood forest product widely used by the population. The present study aims to analyze quantitative and qualitative data on the exploitation of Chinese bamboo in Côte d'Ivoire. To achieve this, a socio-economic survey was conducted among the various actors in Azaguié. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of 144 actors and the data collected was analyzed. The results indicate that Chinese bamboo is mainly exploited in rural areas and in the Yapo-Abbé Classified Forest. The actors in the Chinese bamboo sector are: producers (20.8%), wholesalers (7.6%), pickers (38.8%), shippers (4.8%) and users (13.8%). Producers and wholesalers are adults (39.6%) and pickers and loaders are mainly young people. The school enrollment levels of actors range from primary (41.4%) to higher education (3.3%). The financial benefits derived from the resource range from €15 (producers) to €282 (wholesalers) per load. In one month, actors get on average three times these amounts. The Ivorian State earns €96 on average per load. As a source of jobs, bamboo from China is a resource whose sustainable management must be considered at the national level.
