United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (known under the acronyms ONUAA or, more commonly, FAO or, more commonly, FAO or in English Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) is a specialized organization of the United Nations system, created in 1945 in Quebec City. Its headquarters have been in Rome, at the Palazzo FAO, since 1951. As of 15 June 2013, FAO has 197 members, representing 194 member countries, one Member Organization. Its stated ultimate objective is “To help build a world free of hunger.”

Côte d'Ivoire has been a member of FAO since 1961 and the Organization has been present on a permanent basis in the country since 1987. Today, FAO interventions in Côte d'Ivoire aim to transform agriculture into a productive and income-generating sector that should enable the country to make progress on the path of sustainable development, food security and peacebuilding.
