Plant biodiversity and use value in the Sudanian zone of Côte d'Ivoire
The vegetation of northern Côte d'Ivoire is mostly dominated by savannas that have been the subject of few botanical studies. The present study carried out in Tengrela in northern Côte d'Ivoire aims to assess the diversity of plant formations and their uses by local populations.
Data collection combined the surface survey method and the so-called itinerant survey method. Ethnobotanical surveys have been conducted among traditional practitioners to understand the cultural importance of species.
The study highlighted 6 plant formations that are open forests, gallery forests, fallow lands, wooded savannas, ponds and grassy savannas. There are 402 species divided into 269 genera and 84 families including 22 species with special status.
The investigation shows that several species are used by local populations for consumption, the treatment of diseases, and various other uses. Species for food use are mainly harvested in fallow land, while those for therapeutic use are found in wooded savannas and open forests. Gallery forests are home to species with multiple uses. The destruction of these natural ecosystems accentuates the loss of plant biodiversity.
