Following the example of their predecessors in the study of West African vegetation (see the history of this question in R. SCHNELL, 1952) J.-L. GUILLAUMET; and E. ADJANOHOUN (1971) - subdivided Côte d'Ivoire into domains and sectors based not only on the predominant formations in the landscape, but also on their current dynamism.

This led them to distinguish:

- the Guinean Domain - umbrophilic sector - mesophilic sector - coastal sector - mountain sector

- the Sudanese domain - sub-Sudanese sector - Sudanese sector.
