COFFEE-CACAO: ACTORS IN THE SECTOR TAKE STOCK OF TRACEABILITY WORK TO PRIME MINISTER PATRICK ACHI

On February 21, 2022, in Abidjan, the Ivorian Prime Minister, Patrick Achi, had an exchange with all actors in the coffee-cocoa sector on the progress of the implementation of the traceability system.

“The Prime Minister invited us to present the progress of our work on the traceability of coffee and cocoa. He wanted us to do it in the presence of exporters, with whom we are in daily contact... We have a responsibility to work together so that our country's cocoa is defended in the face of consumers. It's the same product and we have the same interests. Therefore, there will not be several traceability, but a single traceability at the national level,” said the Director General of the Café-Cacao Council (CCC), Yves Brahima Koné.

The Council has defined a traceability system that will be usable by all operators. It is within this framework that the census of all producers in the sector is taking place. As well as the development of tools to operationalize the traceability system. “By the end of March 2022, we will start distributing the first cards to planters,” he said.

With regard to European Union regulations, namely the ban on the import into its zone of agricultural products from deforestation, the president of the Exporters' Group (GEPEX), Françoise Mariame Koné Bédié, welcomed the government's initiative to set up a unique traceability system for Côte d'Ivoire, with the support of the private sector. “We very much appreciated this invitation from the Prime Minister. The exchanges that took place during the meeting were very enriching,” she was delighted.
