TOURISM PROMOTION OF THE COMOÉ NATIONAL PARK (PNC): THE POPULATION OF BANIA IS INVOLVED
On May 11, 2022, a meeting was held between OIPR agents and the populations of the village of Banai in order to promote tourism in the Comoé National Park (PNC).
The village of Bania, located at the eastern entrance of the Comoé National Park, has set up a tourist camp 14 kilometers inside this protected area.
This initiative of the local population is part of the revival of tourism in Comoé National Park initiated by the Ivorian Office of Parks and Reserves (OIPR). Indeed, in the 80s and 90s, the PNC enjoyed a tourist success that propelled it onto the international scene. But gradually, this dynamic space saw its tourist activities reduce until it faded away from 2002 with the outbreak of the socio-political crisis. With the takeover of the site by the OIPR, the PNC is acquiring its attractions with the vision of wildlife as a major element. In addition to the growing diversity of its fauna and flora observed in recent years, tourist infrastructures are under construction.
This revival of tourist activities is intended to be inclusive through the active participation of the populations living near Comoé National Park. Thus, the population of the village of Bania, with the technical and financial support of the Direction de Zone Nord-Est and the Foundation for Parks and Reserves of Côte d'Ivoire (FPRCI), has been developing tourism initiatives at the eastern entrance of the Park in recent years. Apart from their support in guiding visitors, the village has built a tourist camp 14 kilometers inside the park. This space for rest and events, consisting of five traditional huts built from local materials, five modern tents and a restaurant, has a capacity of thirty people.
The tourist camp of Bania, with quality resource persons, offers several services such as accommodation, catering based on local culinary dishes, traditional dances around campfires or in the middle of the day, art objects, tourist guidance, tourist guidance, hiking, various games, etc.
Through the construction and operation of this tourist camp, the population of Bania wants to share with the rest of the world its cultural wealth and local know-how and benefit from the benefits of PNC management. His initiative is an example for other local populations who would like to work with the manager of the Comoé National Park in creating sustainable incomes.
