Workshop to present the project “Use of environmental DNA as a tool to help the conservation of biodiversity in fresh waters in Côte d'Ivoire: the case of the Bandama River”
On Thursday, July 7, 2022, a feedback workshop on environmental DNA was held at the Council Room of Nangui Abrogoua University.
Indeed, Nangui Abrogoua University and the company NatureMetrics, a leader in the field of high-throughput methods based on DNA, with the financial support of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), have taken the initiative to assess biodiversity through the use of environmental DNA as a tool to help the conservation of biodiversity in fresh water in Côte d'Ivoire: the case of the Bandama River.
This approach made it possible to acquire reliable data on the living resources of the Bandama River, despite a context of habitat modification, overexploitation of fishery resources and water pollution.
The objective of this project was to (i) know the species and understand their geographical distribution, (ii) assess biodiversity “hotspots” and define areas of interest for conservation, (iii) set up an updated database on the biodiversity of the Bandama River and finally (iv) to strengthen the human and material capacities of Nangui Abrogoua University.
