Distribution and conservation status of catarrhine primates in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa)

Tropical forests make up most of the habitat of human primates, but they are increasingly fragmented as a result of human activities. In Côte d'Ivoire, the current forest cover can be summed up in ants. The knowledge of the diversity of primates and their distribution in these forest relics is therefore proved to be carried out in two classified forests and a village forest in the Tonkpi region in western Côte d'Ivoire. It aims to inventory primate species then to highlight their spatial distributions and finally to determine their conservation status as well as the threats that weigh on them.

The methodology used consisted first of all in surveys of the settlements bordering these forest fragments to get a general idea of the species of monkeys in the region and the forests that shelter them. Then, foot surveys were organized in the forests identified during the surveys.

At the end of this study, seven primate species characteristic of West African forests were confirmed in these forest relics based on direct and indirect observations. These s, especially in forests on mountains and in flooded areas except for which is more abundant even in fallow lands. Among Piliocolobus badius, we are in the Vulnerable (VU) category and five (5) The sustainable conservation of these primates is threatened by agriculture, gold mining, hunting, these forest relics of primate species whose protection is of global interest and the need for strengthened protection measures.
