Diversity of mammalian wildlife in cocoa agroforests in the forest-savannah contact zone in central Côte d'Ivoire

In Côte d'Ivoire, the practice of cocoa farming is carried out by an extensive slash and burn system, a factor of deforestation and loss of habitat for wildlife. However, in some regions of the country, such as Toumodi, peasants have long used a farming system that combines cocoa trees with plants and other crops. Although studies are carried out on the floristic composition of this agroforestry system, very little information is available on fauna in general and on mammals in particular. To overcome this deficit, this study was conducted to identify mammal species that may be encountered in cocoa agroforests in the Toumodi region. It consisted in conducting a survey among planters to get a general idea of the Mammals existing or having existed in the region on the one hand and, on the other hand, in carrying out walking surveys in the plantations to confirm or refute the information collected during the investigation. From these investigations, it appears that this region is still home to 14 species of Mammals grouped into 6 orders (Rodentia, Chiroptera, Lagomorpha, Artiodactyla, Carnivora and Ungulata). These orders are representative of the major orders of mammals in well-preserved areas of the country. Agroforestry could therefore contribute to the conservation of wildlife, in particular mammalian fauna.
