The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (in English Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species, CITES), also called the Washington Convention, is an intergovernmental agreement signed on March 3, 1973 in Washington. CITES must ensure that international trade in species listed in its Appendices, as well as parts and products derived from them, does not harm the conservation of biodiversity and is based on the sustainable use of wildlife.

To this end, CITES establishes a legal framework and procedures to ensure that internationally traded wildlife is not overexploited. CITES periodically updates and publishes its data on international trade in protected species (August 20101).
